David Kittams
M.D., F.A.A.P.
Retired, Founding Physician

David’s early years were in Yellowstone National Park, where his father was a park biologist and elk-range manager, and his mom was church organist and pianist. David returned to his native Minneapolis for high school (Blake School, which fellow-wrestler Al Franken attended about ten years later.) David studied chemistry, especially biochemistry, in undergraduate and graduate school at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Before medical school (U of N, Omaha ’71) came a year at S. F. Theological Seminary (San Anselmo) dedicated to social ethics, systematic theology, and biblical studies.

Dr. Kittams interned at Cook County Hospital, Chicago, and completed a pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital and Research Center, Oakland. During a two-year stint in a low-income clinic and another year in a private practice south of San Francisco, he became interested in preventive oral health, international families, and health care financing.

He opened his own office in 1979 in south Berkeley, less than a mile from Children’s Hospital. Dr. Winokur joined him eight years later, and they opened a second office in northwest Berkeley. Dr. Salsburg signed on in 2001, just before David and his family left for an eleven-month trip through Latin America (with months in Brazil and weeks in southernmost Patagonia).

He continues to be interested in the biology of breast milk and promoting breastfeeding. He likes romance languages, minerals, playing handball, mountain biking, skiing, espresso, birds, jazz piano playing, and brewing beer. His two sons are capoeiristas (Brazilian martial artists) and Spanish and Portuguese speakers. Arturo is also a graphic artist and father of David’s perfect grandsons, Ray and Ravi. Lee is recently graduated from Cal Berkeley.

What is a PNP?

A PNP or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner is a nurse who has completed advanced training in the field of pediatric health care.  A PNP holds a Masters Degree in Nursing and has an education that focuses on the health care of infants, children and adolescents.  Much like a pediatrician, Pediatric Nurse Practitioners work with patients from infancy to young adulthood, diagnosing illness, conducting exams, and prescribing medication. PNPs focus on the “whole child”, including well child care and guidance for physical, emotional, intellectual, and social aspects of development. PNPs are able to treat acute illnesses as well as chronic illnesses.  The pediatricians and PNPs work in collaboration to ensure quality care and access.

Healthcare Student Training Program

The doctors and nurse practitioners at Kiwi Pediatrics support the various medical and nursing schools in the community. We frequently host these students at our offices to help them further their educational goals. From time to time, the provider will have the students assist them by seeing our patients in the exam room and presenting their findings to the doctor/nurse practitioner. This is always followed with a one on one consultation with the provider and the patient. The medical staff will ask the family if they are comfortable with the student seeing their child and, as always, encourage those that are not to please let us know.
