Robin F. Winokur
M.D., F.A.A.P.

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Winokur, (aka Dr. W, Dr. Robin, or Robin) came to California to attend Stanford University in 1973 where she earned a B.S. in Biological Sciences and met her husband, Peter. After graduation, in 1976, she attended the University of Michigan Medical School. In 1981, Robin and Peter came back to California and Robin continued her training with a pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital in Oakland. There she met her future business partner, Dr. David Kittams, whom she “admired for his compassionate care”. In 1985, Robin began her career at Kiwi Pediatrics joining Dr. Kittams at his practice on Alcatraz Avenue in South Berkeley. She became Board Certified in 1986. The two of them have been an influential pair known for devoting much effort to the needs of the underprivileged and children with special healthcare needs in the Berkeley and Oakland areas.

Since that time Robin has had several positions in Medical Staff Leadership at Children’s Hospital in Oakland including Chair of the Department of Medicine. She has also accumulated many awards including being named to the “Best Doctors of the East Bay” in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010-2015, the Robert Gerdsen Award at Children’s Hospital for Commitment to Primary Care and Community Service, the Resident Teaching Award at Children’s Hospital (twice), a Special Achievement Award in 2008 from the American Academy of Pediatrics for Advocacy for Children with Special Healthcare Needs, and the Bronze Bambino Award for career achievements and service from the Medical Staff of the Children's Hospital and Research Center in Oakland.

Robin also provides pediatric care at the George Mark Children’s House for children with complex medical needs receiving respite or end-of- life care. She is also involved in several projects to improve collaborative care with Mental Health providers.

Robin and Peter are the proud parents of 2 grown children, Brian ( a “Techie”) and Lauren (on her way to becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner). They are proud longtime Oakland residents and enjoy exploring Oakland and the area, hiking, gardening, cooking (eating, too) and music. Robin also enjoys photography, reading, playing guitar and nature watching.

What is a PNP?

A PNP or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner is a nurse who has completed advanced training in the field of pediatric health care.  A PNP holds a Masters Degree in Nursing and has an education that focuses on the health care of infants, children and adolescents.  Much like a pediatrician, Pediatric Nurse Practitioners work with patients from infancy to young adulthood, diagnosing illness, conducting exams, and prescribing medication. PNPs focus on the “whole child”, including well child care and guidance for physical, emotional, intellectual, and social aspects of development. PNPs are able to treat acute illnesses as well as chronic illnesses.  The pediatricians and PNPs work in collaboration to ensure quality care and access.

Healthcare Student Training Program

The doctors and nurse practitioners at Kiwi Pediatrics support the various medical and nursing schools in the community. We frequently host these students at our offices to help them further their educational goals. From time to time, the provider will have the students assist them by seeing our patients in the exam room and presenting their findings to the doctor/nurse practitioner. This is always followed with a one on one consultation with the provider and the patient. The medical staff will ask the family if they are comfortable with the student seeing their child and, as always, encourage those that are not to please let us know.
