Healthy Cooking and Eating

Does your family have a New Years Resolution to adopt a healthier lifestyles?

Everyone at Kiwi loves cooking with their family, and we recommend all of our patients cook together with their families.  This is the goal of ChopChop as well; ChopChop is an innovative non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire and teach children and families to cook real food together. They believe that cooking and eating together as a family is a vital step in resolving the obesity and hunger epidemics.

The following are ChopChop's recommendations for a healthier New Year:

1. Resolve to learn new cooking skills.  Try caramelizing onions. Or stock up on other kitchen know-how's, like freezing fruits and vegetables or stretching and storing ingredients. If you’re starting from scratch, use our guide to gather essential kitchen equipment. Find even more tips and tricks on our Pinterest page.

2. Get new recipes. This year, get four issues of delicious, diverse, healthy, and kid-tested recipes, delivered to your door. With a subscription to ChopChop, you won’t run out of recipes to cook together as a family, and you’ll also find fun food facts, word searches, mazes, and other puzzles, as well as games to keep kids moving.

3. Tackle picky-eating habits. ChopChop founder Sally Sampson has co-written a new book, The Picky Eater Project: 6 Weeks to Happier, Healthier Family Mealtimes. Focusing on kids’ participation, interactive strategies, kitchen experiments, and delicious kid-friendly recipes, the book is based on a six-week plan that makes shopping and cooking fun.

4.  Re-try “yuck” foods.  If boiled broccoli and sautéed Brussels sprouts haven’t gone over well in your house, give them a new spin. Try new cooking methods like roasting broccoli or preparing Brussels sprouts with soy sauce.  Put a “popcorn” spin on cauliflower and you might get a few more smiles at the table. Include kids in the cooking process and it’s even more likely to be a success.

5. Join the club.  The ChopChop Cooking Club is a great way to stay committed to cooking together as a family. You’ll get one new recipe in your inbox each month. That means if you dedicate one meal a month to earning your Cooking Club badge, you’ll have a year’s worth of cooking skills when you’re done.
